From stage 4 to thriving: lessons in reclaiming your health

This is my personal story, not medical advice. My medical team was part of every step.

I'm a stage 4 cancer survivor. I don't say that for sympathy, and I don't say it lightly. I say it because it's the reason I do what I do today. Going through something like that strips life down to what matters. Coming out the other side, I got my health back through intermittent fasting, nutrition and changing the way I live.

I'm not going to tell you what worked for me will work the same way for you. Every body is different, and every man's situation is his own. But along the way I learned some lessons that I believe apply to any man over 40 who wants to feel better and live longer. Here they are.

Lesson 1: Your health can't wait for "later"

Most of us treat our health like a home repair project we'll get to eventually. Next month. After the busy season. When the kids are older. I understand that, because a lot of men are carrying a lot.

But later has a way of never showing up. Going through what I went through taught me that the time you have is the time you have. Waiting for the perfect moment to start taking care of yourself is a gamble, and the odds aren't in your favor.

You don't need a crisis to make a change. That's the whole point of this lesson. I'd much rather you start today, on an ordinary day, than wait for a wake-up call.

Starting doesn't have to mean overhauling everything at once, either. It can be as small as drinking more water, taking a walk after dinner or going to bed a little earlier. The size of the first step matters far less than taking it.

Lesson 2: Curiosity is a superpower

When I set out to get my health back, I wanted to understand how my body worked. I dug into nutrition research. I read, I asked questions and I learned about food, fasting and how daily habits affect how we feel.

That curiosity changed everything. When you understand why you're doing something, you're far more likely to stick with it. Following rules you don't understand feels like a chore. Making choices you understand feels like taking charge.

You don't need to become an expert. That's part of my job as a coach. But I'd encourage you to stay curious about your own body. Notice how different foods make you feel. Pay attention to your energy and sleep. Ask questions. Be a student of your own health.

Lesson 3: When you eat matters

For most of my life, I thought about health only in terms of what I ate. Then I learned about intermittent fasting, which is all about when you eat. For me, it was a turning point.

Fasting gave my days structure. It took a lot of the guesswork and constant snacking out of my routine, and it became one of the cornerstones of how I got my health back. That's my experience, and I'm grateful for it.

I want to be careful here. Intermittent fasting isn't right for everyone, and it isn't a medical treatment for anything. If you're curious about it, talk to your doctor first, especially if you have a health condition or take medication. Your doctor knows your history, and a good plan works alongside your medical care, never in place of it.

Lesson 4: It's a lifestyle, not a diet

If there's one thing I want every man who works with me to take away, it's this: "Forget everything you know about nutrition — this is a lifestyle, not a diet."

Diets have end dates. You white-knuckle through them, and when they're over, you go back to the way you lived before. What gave me my health back wasn't a short-term plan. It was changing how I lived: what I ate, when I ate, how I moved, how I slept and how I handled stress.

A lifestyle change isn't dramatic. It's a lot of small, steady decisions made day after day. It's not about perfection. It's about direction. When you stop thinking in terms of "on a diet" and "off a diet," there's nothing to fall off of.

Lesson 5: You don't have to do it alone

Men are taught to tough things out on their own. I understand that instinct. But reclaiming your health is a lot easier with people in your corner. My medical team was there for me, and the support I had made a real difference.

That's a big reason I became a coach. I want to be in the corner of men who feel the way I once did: tired, discouraged and not sure where to start. A coach isn't there to judge you or lecture you. A coach is there to help you build a plan that fits your life, cheer the wins and help you get back on track when life gets messy. That's what 1-on-1 coaching at Nutricore is built around.

If you want to know more about where I've been and why I do this work, you can read more of my story.

I'm proof that a man can rebuild his health, even after the hardest news of his life. I'm not special. I made a decision, stayed curious, changed how I lived and leaned on people who cared.

Whatever you're carrying right now, it's not too late to start. If you want to talk about where you are and where you'd like to be, give me a call. No pressure. Just a conversation between neighbors.
